So apparently I am Johnny-On-The-Spot around my hogwan (Korean for English Academy). So much so that Mr. Gu trusts me to interview other teaching candidates. Yesterday, I was given the task of interviewing three possible candidates for a teaching position. I couldn't believe it. One thing is for certain my contract is renegotiated daily, and my the job description is as indefinitie as the far reaches of outer space. To this point it has not been in any way that has been a real inconvenience for me, but it blows my mind how Korean business affairs differ from they way we do things in America.
I was sitting in class about to start, and Mr. Gu comes in and says, "Please, you interview for me." Talk about being caught off guard. I love the man to death; he is most gracious! So, I will help him in any way possible. With no preparation, I walk right in and the interview began immediately. I asked question after question to the English-speaking Korean who was looking for employment with our academy. This happened two more times during the course of the day, which is to say I interviewed a total of three canididates (lest my references be to vague). After each Mr. Gu asked my opinion of the candidate, as well as their strenghts and weaknesses as a speaker of my native tongue. It was flattering with a dash of confusion and a pinch of "Crap, I hope I did the right thing!" In retrospect, I feel that my judgements were spot on and that the correct decision was made. Needless to say, I found myself at the end of the day a bit flabbergasted.
KICKS ASS: I have a four-day weekend this coming weekend. I am really looking forward to it.
SUCKS ASS: It is a holiday that is celebrated with large family gatherings, and this weekend I was going to see if some co-workers wanted to go out. They will all be out of town with family. So what sucks is that I will be all alone for four days. One more addition to my sucks ass column is that as of today I am out of dip (those that know me know I chew tobacco and dip tobacco. Well I am out and they don't sell it here. If I start to get the shakes from withdrawl I will let you know. Until next time...
