ALL OF THE FOLLOWING CAN BE MADE WITH WHOLE GRAIN RICE, AND THERE IS NO SET RECIPE FOR THE ADDAGE OR SUBSTITUTIONS OF VEGETABLES. HOWEVER, THIS IS HOW IT IS SERVED TRADITIONALLY HERE.
The recipe for Bi Bim Bap:
Put a 1 person portion of rice into a bowl.
Add bean steamed bean sprouts, sliced romaine lettuce, sliced raddish, thinly sliced mushrooms, and tofu.
Mix in any red pepper paste or sauce that you can find (I have seen it in the states)
Finally throw a runny egg on top.
Mix it all together thoroughly and boom! BI BIM BAP (BEE-BIM BOP)You eat it with a large spoon.
The Recipe for Kim Chi Chigay (Pickled Cabbage Soup)
Put into boiling water:
Kim Chi (which I believe is available in the states, in Orlando probably a whole foods or at Colonial and Bumby the oriental part of town). If not it is just cabbage that is pickled and covered with that pepper sauce that I know you can get on the ethnic foods isle; it comes in a clear jar with a green screw-on lid.
Add tofu, thinly sliced pork, onion, bean sprouts, and boil it good. I also add whole cloves of garlic.
Pour the boiling Chigay into a bowl and serve with a side of rice in a smaller bowl. Eat the soup by taking the vegetables out of the soup with a spoon and placing on top of the rice. Scoop some rice up with each bite of the soup and eat.
TAKE OUT THE PORK AND ADD TUNA, AND YOU HAVE CHUMCHI CHIGAY (TUNA SOUP)
Kimbap (kimbop) This is the KOREAN sandwich.
If any of you are skilled enough to make your own sushi at home try rolling it with ham, pickled radish, egg, carrot, and or cabbage (you can also put some peppery sauce in there too. I know it sounds weird, but it is good and healthier than breaded sandwiches.
To make sushit you need one of those handy dandy straw wrapping mats that they use at sushi restaurants. If you know what I am talking about, I am sure you can find one as sushi has become quite popular in the states. If you don't, ask the next time you eat sushi.
Lay thin and dried seaweed on the straw rolling mat. Then smear cooked rice, right out of the pan, evenly over the seaweed. It is important to make sure the rice is moist so that it will get the seaweed damp, thus it won't tear when you roll it.
Then add all of the ingredients on the rice and roll it. Once rolled, slice it as you would sushi and serve, or wrap in tin foil and take for lunch.
SUCKS ASS: I was supposed to get paid Friday and didn't. I would call my boss, but it is the weekend. I budgeted for yesterday and now have no money for fun during the weekend. I have been told this will be a common theme throughout the year from some of the veterans.
KICKS ASS: I am pretty excited about going to Daegu next weekend to see some friends from the states.
