Well it is the end of my first week in Daejeon, Korea and what have I learned. Kimchee(?) is a highly questionable food, although I am now used to its' pungent tast, 6 out of 10 Korean women think I am handsome, Koreans don't enjoy beards, students in Korea behave just as American students, their television can either inspire the greatest of comedic moments or leave you totally speechless and a little freaked out, they don't have bathtubs, and you have to have your head on a swivel at all times when walking on the street (no paved walkways that would constitute sidewalkedness).
I really do like it hear. I have had some trouble meeting new people. I have been here a week, seen a handful of white people and have been ignored by all of them. It just goes to show--you cannot take the west out of a westerner. In America, if we don't know someone we don't acknowledge them, and it has proven to be the same here. The difference? It's not like we are westerners in a stack of westerners. We are the precious few in a sea of Daejeonites; I expected more camaraderie. Oh well.
I am terrified to go into restaurants and hold up a line because of my ineptitudes in the ways of speaking Korean. I am also terrified to eat in restaurants because they sit on the floor and in 99% of them they have no menus, just writing on the wall with prices. Hmmhmm! Yes, I will have that poster of Korean writing for 6,000 Won. Merci, garcon.
Anyways, I am going to go get a drink. Tomorrow is Sunday, and I will have more time to write!
To be continued.....
PLEASE FORGIVE IN SPELLING MISHAPS. I AM WRITING THIS BEFORE RUNNING OUT THE DOOR.
